This customer called us because their tenant said the gutters needed cleaned. The landlord was unaware that it had screens on them but was aware that there was some plant growth.
After arriving we realized that this job was another one for the books.
People ask us all the time if we would recommend gutter guards or screens and we tell them no.
Why?
Because we see gutters with guards or screens that have gone off the deep end. Typically people stop paying attention to their gutters when they have guards or screens and as a result they get really bad.
What?
Guards and screened gutters till clog?
Absolutely and when they do the problem is 10x worse.
With this job we had to manually remove all the screens before cleaning them out. That was some work and a lot of cleanup with all the plants growing through the screens.
The biggest and scariest problem clogged gutters can cause home owners is water damage.
Water can be very destructive when it leaks into a home just 1 time. However, most water damage from gutters is drip by drip or leak by leak.
A lot of times the most common water damage appears as rotted fascia or soffit. Sometimes it leads to rotting railing, siding, or leaks in the home and causes drywall issues, basement issues, etc.
Some other damage is that heavy gutters will pull away from the house. Eventually the gutter will fall off the house and often times the only solution after that is replacement.
Full gutters also promote animal and bug infestations. Ants love clogged gutters but they are not the only ones.
List below of common problems associated with full/clogged gutters.
1. Water damage
2. Ant infestations
3. Squirrel infestations
4. Bee infestations
5. Cockroach infestations
6. Snakes
7. Loosening gutters due to weight
8. Gutters falling off the house
